It is becoming increasingly important for architects to present the quality of their work as realistically and in as much detail as possible. Architectural models from the 3D printer are the first choice for this, as shown by a project for a social centre in Ghana and the art project of the European Parliament.
In fact, Binder Jetting 3D printing is perfect for presentations of this kind. After a tropical storm destroyed a non-profit building, the Catholic diocese decided to build a new social centre. The project is to have a pioneering character; planning and conception are by the Munich architect Wieland Schmidt. Naturally, people in Ghana were curious to see what the new building complex would look like in detail. That's why Wieland Schmidt decided to digitise the building data and print out the social centre in the voxeljet 3D service centre. Here, a high-performance VX800 printer generated the Christ the King Social Center in plastic measuring 840 x 840 x 225 mm directly from the CAD data using a layering process.
"The architectural model is printed in perfect voxeljet quality, rich in detail and precise. The mechanical stability of the 3D prints is also excellent, so the model survived the long journey from Augsburg to Ghana undamaged. The presentation there was a complete success," says Wieland Schmidt, the architect.
3D printed European Parliament
With EUROPE, the Polish academic Dr. Tomasz Matusewicz, who has also made a name for himself as an artist, picks up on the recurring theme of identity in his work. This art object is intended to create a symbolic place virtually on the internet that unites Europeans regardless of their multinationality.
Thanks to the possibilities of 3D printing, the project was able to take concrete shape, at least on a model scale. The plastic model generated by a VX1000 industrial 3D printer shows EUROPE exactly as the artist created it. The model features a great wealth of detail and high precision. Using the Binder Jetting 3D print, Dr. Matusewicz was able to convince himself of the spatial representation and the successful proportions of his work. In addition, the plastic model is ideally suited for presentation purposes.
"The technology of three-dimensional printing allows certain projects, which until now could only be realised with great effort or not at all, to become reality. This creates new freedom for architects and artists, but also for the many students at colleges and universities," says Dr Tomasz Matusewicz.
