TÜV SÜD: Accelerating the development of industrial additives production

At the fifth formnext from 10 to 12 November 2020, TÜV SÜD will present its range of services for additive manufacturing and the presentation "Additive Manufacturing reaches state of the art - It's time to save cost & time" by Gregor Reischle. New are certifications of production facilities, workflows and production processes as well as combined audits. Approvals for regulated industries, digitalisation services and training have also been added. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, this year's trade fair will take place exclusively online.

"Over the past three years, our team has developed a standardized implementation process for the associated technologies and procedures", says Gregor Reischle, Head of Additive Manufacturing at TÜV SÜD. "This makes industrial additive manufacturing a state-of-the-art process, which saves time and money". In contrast, the costs for implementation were hardly plannable in the first 15 years. The procedure was characterised more by trial and error than methodically. A high degree of specialist knowledge was required and many applications could only be realised with great effort. Gregor Reischle: "Until recently, there were also no guidelines for the use of the available technologies. In some cases, this also affected the safety and quality of some of the parts produced. This void has now been closed by tailor-made normative guidelines". Among them are DIN SPEC 17071, ISO/ASTM CD 52920 (in preparation), ISO/ASTM WD 52930 (in development), ISO/ASTM 52901:2017, which have already been published or will be published shortly. In the future, safe, economical, high-quality and sustainable products will always emerge from the "3D printer".

First worldwide certified 3D printing construction process: LEHVOSS / Ultimaker

The first "reproducible AM construction process" certification awarded by TÜV SÜD demonstrates the safe and reliable combination of hardware and material. The clients were the LEHVOSS Group and Ultimaker, in order to make the printing of LUVOCOM® 3F filaments scalable and industrialise it. Among other things, the material properties and the production process with the Ultimaker S5 Pro bundle printer system were tested. In this way, the companies demonstrate that they have reproducible processes with reliable quality assurance. LEHVOSS markets chemical and mineral raw materials. Ultimaker manufactures 3D printers and supplies the associated software. This innovative certification concept covers, among other things, the following contents: mechanical characteristics, geometric repeatability and the resulting emission characteristics. The main advantage of the certified AM building process is that it benefits the technology users. There are cost and time savings during the introduction of quality-oriented production facilities.

First combined audit: Sauber Engineering

TÜV SÜD has carried out its first combined audit at Sauber Engineering AG. At the same time, certificates according to ISO 9001 and DIN SPEC 17071 were issued for the metal and plastic production. The interlinked certification process certifies not only functioning management systems, but also qualitatively mature products. The company specialises in development and production for racing and Formula 1.

Checklist for on-demand medical products

Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, borders have currently been closed once again, which in some cases interrupts important supply chains - even for medical devices. On-demand 3D printing on site provides alternatives. TÜV SÜD offers manufacturers specially developed checklists to help them meet the associated high quality requirements and legal regulations.
