SEMANTiCS 2019 - FIZ Karlsruhe hosts first workshop on Patent Text Mining & Semantic Technologies

On September 12, 2019 the first workshop on the application of patent text mining and semantic technologies (PatentSemTech) will take place at FIZ Karlsruhe as part of the conference SEMANTiCS 2019. The full-day workshop will be jointly organized with the Vienna University of Technology.

The event deals with the development of new concepts and methods of text and data mining (TDM). They serve to query and analyze knowledge published in patents. In this context, FIZ Karlsruhe develops and operates information services that support research and innovation in industry and science. Leni Helmes, Member of the Board of FIZ Karlsruhe and Head of IT, Development, and Applied Research, emphasizes: "With new research approaches, we are facing up to the challenges that rapidly growing data volumes and increased demands, among other things, place on patent analysis. We are working on methods of machine learning, distributed processing for the analysis of large amounts of data (Big Data Analytics), and semantic indexing of patent full texts".
The Workshop Program
The one-day workshop starts with a keynote speech by Anthony Trippe, Managing Director of Patinformatics LLC. The workshop will be followed by scientific presentations on topics such as automatic terminology recognition and patent landscaping. It provides a snapshot of the patent situation of a specific technology, either within a specific country, region or globally. Patent Landscaping Reports can also be used to analyze the validity of patents ꟷ based on data about their legal status.
The program will be continued with a Demo and Industry Talk session in which practical applications will be presented and discussed. Participants can then gain practical experience through an interactive tutorial session on patent landscaping. In another session the topic "From A-Z, towards a patent text mining application" will be discussed. The workshop concludes with a fishbowl discussion to promote the exchange of data and know-how between science and industry.
Establishment of a Patent Text Mining Community
The PatentSemTech-Workshop will not remain a single event, but will be developed into an active community in the medium term. Hidir Aras, TDM project manager at FIZ Karlsruhe: "It will initiate activities as diverse as webinars, training sessions and evaluations, which will promote TDM for full patent texts and create benchmark data for use cases". FIZ Karlsruhe plans to continue the workshop together with the TU Vienna for three years. Further supporters of the workshop are the European Patent Office, Artificial Researcher-IT GmbH and Research Studio DSc.
The PatentSemTech workshop will take place in building 241 of FIZ Karlsruhe on the north campus of KIT.
