First guideline for assured quality in additive manufacturing

The currently presented DIN SPEC 17071 is the first standard for quality assurance in additive manufacturing. It defines uniform requirements for plants, materials, processes and employees. Companies can use the guideline to set up a risk-minimized production process ready for industrial use. The standard was developed with the significant participation of Deutsche Bahn, MT Aerospace, Siemens and TÜV SÜD and can be viewed at the certifier's stand at formnext in Frankfurt until 22 November (Hall 11.1, Stand E60).

The lack of standards, an even earlier degree of technological maturity and little experience with the processes used have made it difficult to set up an industrial additive manufacturing facility. In addition to high quantities, product quality is also a challenge. Uniform strength values and dimensions are indispensable, especially in sectors such as aviation, railways and medical technology. "With the help of the new standard, manufacturers can set up risk-minimized and quality-assured production in just six months," says Gregor Reischle, Head of Additive Manufacturing at TÜV SÜD. "Previously, this sometimes took many years.

DIN SPEC 17071 summarizes the state of the art in additive manufacturing and is easy to implement because the quality requirements can be clarified for specific components or products. Gregor Reischle: "This really takes users further. The result is complete and reliable requirement specifications, which makes cooperation with material suppliers or contract manufacturers much easier. While previously more than 200 different variables had to be considered, the standard significantly reduces them. The remaining product-specific requirements are then achieved purposefully and calculably. This not least minimizes the number of necessary supplier audits and simplifies the purchase of components.

The standard is cross-industry and serves as a precursor for an international ISO/ASTM standard. It was officially presented at Beuth-Verlag on 15 November 2019 and can be downloaded free of charge from www.beuth.de TÜV SÜD will be offering a 30-minute introduction to DIN SPEC 17071 for the media and trade visitors at its stand at 9:30 a.m. on every day of the fair.
