The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Korea Increases in January 2015

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Korea increased 0.7 percent in January to 109.2 (2010 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in December, and a 0.4 percent decrease in November.

At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for Korea, a measure of current economic activity, decreased 0.4 percent in January to 107.2 (2010 = 100), following a 0.7 percent increase in December, and a 0.1 percent increase in November.

The LEI for Korea has increased for two consecutive months. Although its six-month growth rate eased a bit compared to the middle of last year, the strengths among the leading indicators remain widespread. Meanwhile, the CEI for Korea pulled back in January, but its six-month change remains positive. Taken together, the current behavior of the composite indexes and their components suggests that the current rate of economic expansion is likely to continue, and may even increase in the months ahead.
