The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Japan Declines

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Japan declined 0.5 percent in June to 99.0 (2004 = 100), following a 1.1 percent decline in May, and a 0.1 percent decline in April.

At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for Japan, a measure of current economic activity, declined 0.5 percent in June to 95.7 (2004 = 100), following a 0.3 percent increase in May, and a 1.5 percent decline in April.

The declines in both the LEI and CEI for Japan have become widespread and persistent in recent months, and the rate at which they are falling continued to accelerate through June. Taken together, the behavior of both indexes suggests that the impressive growth in the first quarter is not
