The carton and folding box industry receives a wealth of entries for The European Carton Excellence Award

Despite the problems caused by COVID-19, Pro Carton - the European Association of Cardboard and Folding Box Manufacturers - and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) have received many excellent entries from all over Europe for “The European Carton Excellence Award 2020”.

For the competition, which is now taking place for the 24th time, partners from the entire supply chain present their most creative and successful ideas from all market sectors. More than ever before, the contributions focused on the topic of sustainability, which shows that the demand for renewable and recyclable packaging continues to grow.

The competition focuses on four main categories, with awards for the use of virgin and recycled fibers - for both food and beverage packaging and general packaging, with the very best packaging receiving the Carton of the Year award. There are also two other main prizes: the “Save the Planet” award for the best cardboard packaging that replaces or reduces less sustainable packaging material, and the “Innovation” award for the most innovative cardboard or material creation. In addition, there are “Platinum” and “Gold” awards for a small selection of first-class contributions, regardless of the material used, which the jury also found to be commendable.

Due to the worsening coronavirus pandemic, the submission deadline for contributions has been postponed and the traditional format has been adapted in order to switch the first phase of the submission process completely to digital. At the end of this initial phase, all judges were given physical samples of the short-listed packaging so that they can hold the packaging in their own hands for the final evaluation and decision. This ensured that the evaluation process met the highest quality requirements again this year.

The shortlist for the “European Carton Excellence Award” and the “Pro Carton Young Designers Award” will be published on the Pro Carton website this month (August), and everyone is cordially invited to vote for the “Public Awards” to vote for their favorite.

The winners of the "European Carton Excellence Awards" will be announced at the "Carton E-vent with award ceremony 2020" - an online event that will be organized jointly by Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) on October 7, 2020. The award ceremony also includes the announcement of the winners of the “Pro Carton Young Designers Award” along with the new “Student Video Award”. Usually only high-level executives and decision-makers from the pan-European carton and folding carton industry attend the award ceremony along with the award winners, but the event will be open to all for the first time. Students, teachers, brand owners, media representatives as well as friends and employees of Pro-Carton and ECMA members are all welcome.

Tony Hitchin, General Manager at Pro Carton: “We are very pleased with the large number of very high-quality entries that we have received for the“ European Carton Excellence Awards 2020 ”, especially with regard to the adverse effects of the global pandemic. The carton and folding box industry was even busier and busier than ever in this rather extraordinary year, and the quality of the entries this year shows how seriously the industry experts take their task. In October everyone is cordially invited to join in online to find out who the winners are! "

The jury chairman, Saktar Gidda, added: “The entries were excellent, very well thought out and intelligently designed for the needs of consumers. As expected, the number of entries for the “Save the Planet” category has increased significantly, as consumers are increasingly concerned with the topic of sustainability. The quality of the submissions and the number of students attending was truly amazing considering they don't have access to their usual tools and materials at the moment. Just unbelievable."
