The ace up the sleeve

A joyful event rarely comes alone, says the vernacular with a little imagination. In 2019 Koehler celebrated the 85th anniversary of the production of playing card board at the Oberkirch site. The first coating machine was purchased in 1934. On our website and in the last issue of the Koehler Rundschau, everything worth knowing was reported.

In the same year, Koehler was also able to celebrate a completely different event: world market leadership. Our steadily increasing market penetration in recent years was given a further decisive boost by the elimination of a competitor. The entire team showed impressive flexibility in this respect. "We worked hard to earn the title of 'world market leader'," says Marco Lang, Division Manager Fine Paper, underlining the outstanding performance of all those involved. "From planning, production and equipment to shipping and sales, the gears meshed together here as one could only wish for.

The qualities Casino Classic and Casino Imperial in basis weights from 260 to 410 g/m² with various embossing and finishing forms have already been played in the world's largest casinos. But Koehler's playing card board is also suitable for other applications. The hype of Pokémon trading cards at the turn of the millennium is unforgotten. Magic: The Gathering" is also a trading card game and both are known around the globe. Supported by motion pictures, computer games and their links to the "real" playing cards, the passion for collecting and playing is unbroken and new motifs are constantly being created. Today, Pokémon counts 7,000 different cards and there are more than 20,000 different motifs from Magic!

In a content series that accompanied us throughout 2019, Koehler looked at the playing card theme from different angles. The highlight was a video project with students of the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe.
And now world market leader. Koehler bears the title with pride, but is also aware of his responsibility. "Of course it shows that our efforts and also our staying power have been worthwhile," says Lang. "It has always been our ambition to produce the best playing card board in the world. And we will continue to do so."
