A Flexible Machine Configuration for the Live Production of Perfect Bound Brochures
Muller Martini is showcasing in conjunction with its partners Hunkeler, Heidelberg, ATS and Polar a flexible machine configuration, which will be used to produce a complete brochure live, at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne. The brochure, consisting of digitally printed content (web printing) and a cover, will be bound using hotmelt and then trimmed on three sides in one step.
The seamless checking of cover and content using barcodes will be demonstrated with this configuration. All aggregates involved will use the same barcode system to ensure that the product has the right composition and is produced correctly.
Barcode Matches Cover and Content
The system consists of a Hunkeler UW6 unwinding module, a CS6-I cross-cutting module downstream of it, and, directly connected to that, a Heidelberg Stahlfolder TH 56 inline joint forming machine, which will fold the signatures and transfer them as a gathered pile to an ATS FAB A 820 bundler. The barcode will be used in the bundler to ensure that every set has been fully pre-gathered. The folded signatures will then be combined with the cover at the Vareo small perfect binder, which will be unveiled at Hunkeler Innovationdays as a world premier, and bound into finished coloring books and notebooks. The barcode ensures here too that the cover and the content match. The final three-sided trimming will be performed automatically by the POLAR BC-330 three-knife trimmer and the production barcode will be scanned once again.
The demonstrated inline solution featuring the Vareo allows making numerous different products in short runs without the need for time-consuming changeovers. Both digitally and conventionally printed jobs can be processed as required.
Presto II Digital Production Workflow – for the Pre-Gathering of Signatures Too
What is more, Muller Martini will show at its booth that the Presto II Digital saddle stitcher is also ideally suited to the pre-gathering of signatures. It can be used for the production of both digital and offset printed products. The digitally printed signatures of a cocktail book will be folded using the Stahlfolder TH56 and pre-gathered using the Presto II Digital. The finished book block will then be perfect bound live using Muller Martini's new Vareo small perfect binder, which will be unveiled at the trade fair for the first time.
