Certification by Underwriters Laboratories (UL): Trailblazer on the European Market: Cord Tags Approved for the U.S. Market

Cord-Tag 1 is the first product of its kind in Europe to be certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).Cord-Tag 1, the cable marking offered by Schreiner Group, is the first product of its kind in Europe to be certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). UL is an independent U.S. organization that analyzes and certifies products with regard to their safety. As of now, the Schreiner ProTech business unit offers customized cable tags with approval for the US-market, thus making it easier for its customers to enter there.

Whenever manufacturers of household appliances and small electronic devices launch their products on the U.S. market, they must provide these products with warning notices and technical data. For this, Schreiner Group offers the newly developed solutions Cord-Tag 1 and Cord-Tag 1 OL.

Both cord tag types have been designed for applications according to the standards ANSI/UL817 "Cord Sets and Power-Supply Cords", ANSI/UL 859 "Household Electric Personal Grooming Appliances" und ANSI/UL1727 "Commercial Electric Personal Grooming Appliances". This makes the cord tag suitable for the power cables of virtually all household appliances. Both products have been approved for printing by flexographic, offset, inkjet and thermal transfer procedures. The Cord-Tag 1 OL version can be enhanced by security features or by coatings for protection against external environmental influences.

Within the framework of certification, UL tested several characteristics including wear resistance and durability of the label on various power cable types, especially with different diameters. "After intensive research and many product qualification tests we are very happy to be the first and – for the time being – only European company with the capability and the approval necessary to produce UL-certified cord tags of this classification," Sebastian Baur of Schreiner Group's Research & Development team says.

The innovative solution does not only meet the stringent UL requirements but also offers added value: Security technologies such as holograms, the BitSecure copy detection pattern, LaserSecure pigments or the tracing system KeySecure can be easily integrated.
