Qioptiq builds new production building in Göttingen

On 18 May 2020, Qioptiq symbolically broke the ground for the start of construction work on a new production building in the Science Park business park in Göttingen. The expansion of the production capacities of the photonics specialist, a subsidiary of Excelitas Technologies, has an investment volume of around 25 million euros. A production hall is being built on an area initially measuring approx. 18,000 m², which will house new state-of-the-art clean rooms (class ISO5) and associated production-related office workplaces as well as the necessary logistics infrastructure. The building will have an effective area of approx. 6700 m², of which approx. 1500 m² will be clean room areas. According to the current planning status, the building should be ready for occupancy in July 2021. After commissioning, approx. 100 employees will start work there.

With the new areas, the company in Göttingen will have a total of around 2600 m² of clean rooms for the assembly of complex optical systems as well as for coating and other optical production processes. Qioptiq had already invested substantially in new clean rooms at its headquarters in Königsallee in Göttingen in 2012, 2015 and 2017. The total production area on site (production including clean rooms, laboratories and storage) will be over 8000 m² when the new production building is completed. Dr. Robert Vollmers, Excelita's Vice President Operations, Optics and Qioptiq Managing Director, explained at the ground-breaking ceremony: "The innovative and promising projects we are working on with our demanding customers in the semiconductor industry require the highest standards of cleanliness to be maintained throughout the entire production process. The expansion of our clean room capacities is an important step into the future for us, as the order situation and business prospects continue to develop positively - even in these difficult times".
