UPM ranked 22nd on Corporate Knights' list of the 100 most sustainable companies

UPM ranked 22nd on the list of the 100 most sustainable companies compiled by Canadian-based media and market research company Corporate Knights.

"The Global 100 index is compiled based on quantitative sustainability metrics. This approach fits well with UPM's approach. We pay particular attention to challenging and long-term goals as well as transparency of results and data," says Sami Lundgren, Vice President, Responsibility, UPM.
UPM is one of the 28 companies represented in the Global 100 that have signed up to the United Nations' 1.5 degree target. UPM is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions, climate-friendly forestry and developing innovative, sustainable products as an alternative to fossil fuels. G100 companies create more value from products or services that are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) compared to their peers. As one of only 41 member companies of the United Nations Global Compact LEAD, UPM has made great efforts to integrate the SDGs into its product development processes. Our innovations create value and business opportunities, true to our corporate approach Beyond Fossils.
"The result of this year's analysis shows that the world's leading companies have learned from the 2008/2009 financial crisis," says Toby Heaps, CEO, Corporate Knights. "They have recognised that sustainability can be a success factor in managing crises."
Corporate Knights has analysed some 8,080 companies with revenues of more than USD 1 billion. The Global 100 Index is based on sustainability metrics such as value created from responsible business practices and the share of investments with positive environmental or social impacts. This year's ranking also used a number of new performance indicators that assess the social relevance of companies. Most of the companies in this year's ranking come from Europe (41). Companies from Scandinavia were disproportionately well represented.
