UPM Raflatac receives world’s first APR recognition for a printed PP label that improves PET wash water

UPM Raflatac, a global supplier of innovative and sustainable labeling materials, recently received the APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) recognition with printed PP labels in the PET recycling process with UV Flexo inks and varnish.

“We are excited to be recognized for our continued commitment to circular economy. The recognition of our BOPP Pressure Sensitive labels with RW85C for PET bottles for use with an APR approved Ink System further provides a full solution to Brand owners,” stated Gabrielle Whittaker, Director, Films and Specials SBU, UPM Raflatac, Americas.
According to an APR Review Committee, appointed per the APR Recognition Operation Procedures, the data was “correctly obtained by a qualified laboratory and was completely presented to show the varnish and inks on an APR Recognized pressure sensitive label substrate submitted meet or exceeds all critical guidance.”
The proprietary top coated PP with the proprietary wash-off adhesive leads to a cleaner PET recycling stream that enables improved recycling of PET bottles and containers. This recognition solves an industrywide issue of recycling stream contamination with leaching of inks and/or ink components during hot caustic wash cycle.
The Association of Plastic Recyclers is an international trade association representing the plastics recycling industry. APR member companies are committed to the success of plastics recycling. Membership spans the entire industry and through their participation APR member companies are shaping the future of our industry.
