Metsä Board Kyro makes progress towards fossil-free mill

Hämeenkyrön Voima power plant, from which Finnish board producer Metsä Board draws energy for its Kyro mill, has now switched from peat burning to renewable energy. In future, the power plant will use wood from Metsä Group's production as well as by-products from wood procurement as fuel. The elimination of peat burning reduces the share of fossil fuels in Metsä Board's Kyro mill from a good quarter to about one tenth.

The phase-out of peat burning required significant investments in power plant technology to prevent corrosion-related boiler damage and to optimise running conditions. Previously, about one fifth of the power plant's fuel requirements were covered by peat. The investments will now enable the plant to produce energy and supply local heat in a more environmentally friendly way.
Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium virgin fibre-based board and a Metsä Group company, has set itself the ambitious goal of fossil-free production plants and products by the end of 2030. Eliminating energy derived from peat combustion brings Metsä Board a step closer to achieving this goal.
