The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Japan Increases in January 2015

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Japan increased 0.1 percent in January to 103.8 (2010 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in December, and a 0.6 percent increase in November.

At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for Japan, a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.6 percent in January to 98.8 (2010 = 100), following a 0.4 percent increase in December, and a 0.1 percent decline in November.

The Conference Board LEI and CEI for Japan have improved moderately since mid-2014, after having declined throughout the first half of last year. Taken together, the behavior of both indexes suggests that the current improvement in economic conditions should continue in the short-term, although the pace of recovery will likely be modest.
