DSM introduces breakthrough low toxicity and high functionality crosslinkers

Royal DSM, a global science-based nutrition, health and sustainable living company, today announced the launch of a new, highly innovative crosslinker portfolio with an unprecedented combination of low toxicity and a powerful profile: NeoAdd™ PAX. The new patent-pending polymeric DSM aziridine crosslinker products will increase safety in a variety of industries and demonstrate DSM's commitment to using science to develop sustainable solutions that exceed traditional market alternatives.

End users and regulators worldwide are increasingly concerned about the potential toxicity of crosslinking solutions. Currently available carbodiimide crosslinkers typically offer lower toxicity but impair functionality. Conventional aziridine crosslinkers, on the other hand, provide higher functionality but may have an impact on human health and the planet. In line with its ambitious goal to eliminate all chemicals of very high concern from its end products by 2025, DSM has developed a novel polymeric aziridine technology that offers high levels of processability and functionality, as well as very low toxicity.
Thanks in particular to its unique chemical design and high molecular weight, the NeoAdd™ PAX product family offers outstanding resistance to chemicals and water as well as excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates and requires no baking or heating after application. Compared to most water-based carbodiimide-based coating systems, PAX offers significant functional advantages, as higher chemical resistance can be achieved at low dosages. In addition, NeoAdd™ PAX is fully REACH compliant and, due to its low toxicity profile, significantly reduces labeling requirements compared to conventional aziridine crosslinkers.
NeoAdd™ PAX therefore opens up new opportunities in a variety of markets, including industrial, architectural, packaging, paint, adhesives and leather coatings. The first two products are NeoAdd™ PAX-523, specifically designed for use in waterborne industrial and architectural coating systems where superior performance is required, and NeoAdd™ PAX-521 for use in waterborne primers, paints and coatings for packaging applications.
Jon Cronin, Head of Global Innovation Growth at DSM Coating Resins: "The new NeoAdd™ PAX family of crosslinkers is perfectly in line with our purpose-driven, performance-driven strategy; it is a sustainable solution that works for both people and the planet. Our new crosslinker represents a breakthrough innovation in that it competes with traditional aziridines in terms of functionality, but offers significant safety and sustainability benefits to many different industries and markets. I am very proud that our smart science is being used more than ever to make a better life possible!
