LG Electronics, UL Environment Expand 'GREENGUARD' Television Certifcation

LG Ushers in 2015 as Only Manufacturer to Achieve Highest TV Performance While Focusing on Improving Indoor Air Quality

LG Electronics USA and UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), today announced that LG's new 55-, 65- and 77-inch class 4K Ultra HD OLED TVs have received the coveted "GREENGUARD" Certification, which sets a new precedent for television manufacturers to help create healthier indoor environments.

Announced here at the 2015 International CES®, this noteworthy industry achievement builds on last summer's major milestone when LG's 55-inch class 2014 OLED model was the first TV in the world to be GREENGUARD certified. Now, LG has achieved GREENGUARD Certification for nine additional OLED TVs models for 2015.

To confirm low emissions from the LG OLED TVs, UL Environment performed rigorous tests against the GREENGUARD Certification standard in its Marietta, Ga. Laboratory. According to UL Environment, televisions amass considerably more surface area in homes and built environments today than they have in decades past. Complex components, plastics and other substances in TV products can create significant potential to contribute to high chemical and formaldehyde exposures.

"As we bring more and more electronics into our living and working environments, we need to think about the impacts of these devices on our health and quality of life," said Lisa Meier, Vice President and General Manager at UL Environment. "We spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors, so impact to indoor air quality is an important consideration. LG's leadership role in systematically obtaining GREENGUARD Certification for its newest OLED TVs demonstrates the company's ongoing commitment to bringing safer and healthier products to market."

Heaven Lee, Senior Vice President, Home Entertainment at LG Electronics USA, said, "LG OLED TVs are designed to deliver superior picture quality with infinite contrast ratio achieving the deepest blacks imaginable and displaying colors that appear richer and brighter. In 2015, 4K OLED TVs are expected to take the industry by storm, and our recognition as the first and only TVs to achieve GREENGUARD Certification worldwide further enhances OLED's standing as a groundbreaking new product."

Recognized and referenced as a leadership standard by more than 400 codes, rating systems, and procurement policies worldwide, the GREENGUARD Certification process requires that products meet some of the world's most rigorous and comprehensive limits for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor environments. Completion of the certification gives assurance that products designed for use in indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, which contribute to the creation of healthier interiors.

GREENGUARD Certification for LG OLED TVs is just one example of the company's leadership in developing products with health and environment in mind. For example, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its operations, LG is a long-time leader in fighting climate change with energy efficient appliances and TVs, including the first ENERGY STAR® certified OLED TVs. Among other initiatives, LG also is focused on conserving natural resources by reducing product weight, using more recycled materials, and designing products for easier recycling.

"We're proud to expand our work with UL Environment to help accomplish LG's broad environmental sustainability goals," Lee said.
