IPR firm as key partner for eco-startup Woodly

Woodly, a startup developing wood-based, carbon neutral and transparent plastic, is partnering with a patent expert from Papula-Nevinpat.
With this partner, the company provides itself with strong IPR protection and takes its product development in a confident direction.

Woodly's CEO/board member Jaakko Kaminen remembers well how he contacted patent expert Linda Norrgard on his second day at work. The company was then developing a new innovation: a recyclable and carbon neutral Woodly plastic whose raw material is wood cellulose and which can be produced using the same process used by the plastic industry."
Woodly received the support of the Finnish patent company, Papula-Nevinpat, where Linda Norrgard now works. A chemical engineering graduate and expert in polymer chemistry, Norrgard quickly grasped the company's development process. "At the beginning, we clarified what patent applications already existed worldwide and together we crated a preliminary IPR strategy for Woodly.
Components of the process in the patent
According to Jaakko Kaminen, commercial challenges follow technical ones in a start-up company. The latter usually turn out to be more serious. The goal is a licensing agreement with customers. To achieve that, Woodly's IPR portfolio has to be particularly strong.
"We guarantee maximum protection for Woodly by patenting, in addition to the formula and its use, the final product."
Jaakko Kaminen has noticed that many companies find the IPR world cumbersome and too expensive. He himself disagrees. IPR offices are easily accessible and the costs are predictable and controllable.
